Children's titles are read aloud far more often than they are read silently, usually by a tired adult at bedtime. That single fact explains most of the rules: short, rhythmic, concrete, and built around one character a child can picture immediately.

A picture-book title is a performance. Say each candidate slowly, the way an adult reads to a sleepy child. If it trips the tongue, or takes a breath and a half, it is too long — most working titles land between two and six words.
“Pip the Rabbit” gives a four-year-old somebody to ask for by name. Abstract titles about friendship, kindness or feelings are for the adult buying the book, and children do not request them twice.
Board books want the shortest, most concrete titles. Picture books can carry a joke or a rhythm. Early readers can take a full sentence. Write the age range on a sticky note and hold your shortlist against it.
