Explore the shelf

Every non-fiction book sells a change.

Six non-fiction shelves.
Pick the one you are writing for.

Non-fiction titles are bought, not admired. A reader scanning a category is asking one question — will this fix my problem? — and the title that answers it in five words beats the clever one almost every time.

The generator below works from six common shelves and produces main titles only. In this category the subtitle carries the detail, so treat each result as the short half of a pair and write the subtitle yourself.

A note from the writing desk

A title is a beginning.
Make it your own.

Name the reader in the title or the subtitle

“Pricing for Freelancers” outsells “The Value Equation” because one of them tells a browsing reader it is for them. If the main title is abstract, the subtitle must name the audience and the outcome — that pair is doing the selling.

Promise a change, not a topic

A topic is a category; a change is a reason to buy. “Habits” is a shelf. “Finish What You Start Without Burnout” is a transaction. Write the sentence a reader would say to a friend about what your book did for them, then cut it down.

Do not over-promise what you can support

Titles with numbers, guarantees or cure language raise expectations your first chapter has to meet, and reviews punish the gap. Say plainly what the book does. Credibility is a long-term asset in non-fiction; a clickable title is not.

Questions

Before you settle on a name.

Is this non-fiction title generator free?

Yes. No sign-up, no limit, and everything runs in your browser.

Does it write the subtitle too?

No, and that is deliberate. Non-fiction subtitles need your specifics — the audience, the method and the result. The generator gives you the short half; write the subtitle to explain it in one clear line.

How long should a non-fiction title be?

The main title is usually one to five words. Anything longer competes with the subtitle and gets truncated in search results and retailer listings.

Can I use a title similar to a bestseller?

Legally, titles are generally not protected by copyright, but bestsellers often carry trademarks on their branding, and a near-copy will lose to the original in every search. Aim to sound like the category, not like one specific book.
