Every future needs a premise.

Six science fiction modes.
Pick the one you are writing.

Science fiction titles tend to name a thing and let the reader infer the world: a protocol, a directive, a station, a signal. The noun does the work, and the restraint is the point — an over-explained title makes a book sound smaller, not bigger.

The generator below covers six modes, from ship-and-void space opera to quiet dystopia and first contact. Add a description and recognised words such as “colony”, “signal” or “loop” will pull the right vocabulary forward.

A note from the writing desk

A title is a beginning.
Make it your own.

Name the idea, not the plot

“The Ashfall Protocol” tells a reader there is a system, a place and a rule being broken. That is a premise. A title that summarises events — who travels where and why — reads like a synopsis and ages badly once the book is written.

Pick a register and stay in it

Hard science fiction titles lean technical and clipped: protocol, directive, zero. Literary science fiction leans quiet and human: what remains, a memory of, the ones we left behind. Mixing the two makes a book hard to shelve, and hard to shelve means hard to sell.

Say the invented name out loud

Made-up place names are the main risk in this genre. If a reader cannot pronounce or spell it, they cannot search for it or recommend it. Two syllables and familiar letter patterns beat something that looks impressive on a cover.

Questions

Before you settle on a name.

Is this sci-fi title generator free?

Yes. There is no account, no limit and no cost. Everything is generated in your browser.

Does it cover space opera and dystopia both?

Yes. Six setups are included: ships and deep space, thinking machines, dystopia, time and memory, first contact, and colonies. Each has its own vocabulary, so the tone shifts when you switch.

Can I use the invented place names?

Yes, they are ordinary constructed names rather than protected ones. As with any name, run a quick search before you build a series around it.

Why are the titles so short?

Because the genre rewards it. Short, concrete titles survive being read at thumbnail size and repeated out loud, which is most of how science fiction spreads between readers.
