A note from the writing desk
“Who Killed the Night Clerk?” and “What the Housekeeper Knew” both work because the reader has to open the book to find out. A title that names the murderer, the motive or the twist has spent your best card before page one.
Readers separate cozy from noir in a glance, and the place name does most of that work. A vicarage and a tea room promise something very different from a precinct and a cold file. Pick the setting word that matches the book you actually wrote, not the one that sounds most dramatic.
Mystery is a series genre. Shapes like “Murder at {Place}” or “The {Place} Murders” let you keep the detective and change the location for ten books. If you plan a series, test your title by writing book three’s title next to it.
